What a season it has been! From the whirlwind purchase of Alaska Blooms, a blessing that felt divinely timed, to learning the art of leadership and delegation, this year has been nothing short of transformative. All while balancing my full-time job away from home and diving into the world of flower farming, this journey has been as rewarding as it has been demanding.
The Beginning of a New Chapter
At the start of our flower farm season, we proudly announced our new ownership of Alaska Blooms. I was beyond excited, even though I knew it would be a challenge. As my family and I settled into our new home in March, I often found myself gazing out the upstairs window at the snow-covered fields, dreaming and scheming about the months ahead.
That window view even became the subject of my first social media post as the farm’s new owner, a snapshot of endless possibilities.
From Remodeler to Flower Farmer
Transitioning from my background in remodeling, banging nails, and laying tile, to flower farming was a leap into the unknown. I didn’t yet have a clear vision of what this role would look like for me, but I embraced the uncertainty. I knew the first season would be a learning experience, and clarity would come with time.
When the snow began to melt, so did my sense of calm. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t panic a little. My job on Alaska’s North Slope takes me away from home for three weeks at a time, and while my 3/3 rotation was a blessing, I worried about how the farm would keep running during my absence.
Finding Strength in Community
This is where I discovered the true value of family. My sister-in-law and niece stepped in, committing their summer to help me bring beautiful blooms to you. Their support was invaluable, and just days before our first event, the flowers began to bloom, and so did we.
Once that first flower opened, it was as if the floodgates burst. One moment, we were marveling at the beauty of the first blooms; the next, we were knee-deep in harvesting, delivering to florists, and selling at farmers' markets.
The Beauty in Imperfection
We harvested twice a day, sometimes three. Hustled to meet demand, and worked tirelessly. It wasn’t perfect, but it was perfectly ours. Even on days when blooms wilted before being seen, the simple act of working among the flowers melted away the stress.
With every success, failure, and steep learning curve, I grew more determined. By the end of the season, I had a clearer vision of what the future holds for Alaska Blooms.
Looking Ahead
After the last bloom was harvested, I took a much-needed break, and my sister-in-law returned home. The silence felt strange. I missed the long, busy days and her companionship. But the quiet also gave me space to reflect and plan for the seasons ahead.
You, our incredible community, embraced this transition through our first flower farm season with open arms. Your support has been invaluable, and I’m so excited to continue sharing this journey with you.
